As I travel, I look out for the stories and symbols that shape us Aussies. Observers say that during the first few years of our lives as we learn to talk, to read, to share in the common story of our people, we’re quietly absorbing a worldview. Normally we’re not conscious of it. It’s like the lenses of our glasses, it is not something we look at, but something through which we look in order to see the world. On the road to Gundagai, I discovered a faithful hound, a popular song and an inspirational sculptor that had all played a part in telling us about ourselves. The sculptor of the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox, Frank Rusconi, also left another impressive legacy for Gundagai in the form of a unique 1.2 metre 'Marble Masterpiece' to showcase the diversity and beauty of NSW marble. Built from 20,948 individual pieces cut, turned and polished by hand over a 28-year period, incredibly, no plans or drawings have ever been found. It seems to have been a labour of love driven by his faith and imagination.

It’s been a while since I had a good ole Streets Vanilla Ice Cream Chocolate covered Paddle Pop so I was a tad envious watching you waving yours around, but also worried it would melt and drip all over the place! Great post, though, Paul! Many thanks for these excellent background stories of the Home I miss so much.

Vaila. Nice that an expat still feels the tug of storytelling from home. We’ve moved on in the ice cream world. It’s called a Magnum now. Nostalgia can be easily dismissed as mere sentiment but it can also transport us to the vital basics that made us who we are. Like genuine home life and the nurturing and care from extended family. I see you celebrating your folks and church family. So much of it is fractured now but it’s important to believe that good families are the building blocks of our culture.
